ABOUT
Welcome to Flag Hints – a small corner of the web entirely dedicated to flags, geography, and the fun of solving a daily riddle.
The concept in a few words
Flag Hints is a daily web game: each day, one country is chosen and you have to guess its flag from a series of hints.
No account needed, no global leaderboard or aggressive competition: the idea is simply to offer you a fun and educational challenge you can play in a few minutes, on your own or with friends.
Here’s how it works :
- A country is selected for the day.
- You see how many guesses you have.
- For each attempt, you submit a country.
- The game gives you progressive hints (colors, symbols, layout of the stripes, etc.).
- If you find the right country, the flag is revealed.
The goal is not just to “win”, but above all to discover or rediscover flags and the countries they represent.
Why a game about flags?
Flags are everywhere: at sports events, in demonstrations, in front of public buildings, on social media… Yet we often know very little about their meaning and what they say about a country’s history.
A flag is :
- a political symbol ;
- a cultural marker ;
- a visual identifier.
By creating Flag Hints, the goal is to turn this curiosity into a daily game :
- to make people want to memorise more flags ;
- to spark questions ;
- to encourage players to go and read more about the history and geography of countries.
A new riddle everyday
The heart of the site is the country of the day.
- Each day corresponds to a single country, the same for all players, wherever they are.
- You have a limited number of guesses (8) to find the correct flag.
- The hints are designed to be progressive: at first they stay quite vague, then become more and more precise.
It’s like a small daily ritual: just as you might check the weather or the news, you can come and do your Flag Hints of the day, alone, with family, or with colleagues.
A game designed for learning, not just clicking
Even though Flag Hints is simple and quick, it’s built on a few important principles.
1. Accessibility
The game runs on a single page, light and optimised for modern browsers. The goal is for you to be able to play:
- on a computer ;
- on a tablet ;
- on a mobile phone.
No download, no sign-up: just open the page and play.
2. Clarity and simplicity
The interface is intentionally minimal:
- no aggressive pop-ups ;
- no stressful countdowns ;
- simple colours to let the content shine: the flags and the hints.
The idea is to offer a clear experience that doesn’t distract from the main goal: guessing the country of the day.
3. Educational dimension
In the long run, Flag Hints aims to go beyond simple “right country / wrong country” feedback. The project is gradually evolving towards:
- more explanations about the symbolism of flags ;
- links to external resources for those who want to dive deeper ;
- alternative game modes.
How are the countries and hints chosen?
Countries and their flags are selected from official lists (internationally recognised states, UN members, sometimes associated territories). The goal is to stick as closely as possible to the references used in standard political geography.
For each country, hints may refer to:
- the colours appearing on the flag ;
- the layout of stripes or shapes (horizontal, vertical, cross, central emblem, etc.) ;
- certain distinctive elements (stars, sun, crescent, coat of arms, etc.) ;
- sometimes general geographic or cultural clues.
Hints are calibrated with a simple idea in mind:
You should be able to make progress with logic and a bit of memory, even if you’re not a vexillology expert.
Advertising, business model, and independence
Flag Hints is an independent project. Hosting, the domain name, and technical development have a real cost. To keep the game:
- free,
- with no account required,
- and without selling personal data,
the site displays advertising spaces through partners such as Google AdSense.
A few principles guide this use of ads:
- No ad overload : The aim is not to turn the page into a wall of banners. Ad placements are limited and designed to remain compatible with a comfortable gameplay experience.
- Respect for rules and privacy : The site strives to comply with advertising platforms’ rules, especially regarding cookies, consent, and transparency. A dedicated page explains how ads are managed and which choices are available to you.
- Editorial independence : No advertiser has any influence over the selection of countries, hints, or game mechanics. Advertising is there to allow the site to exist, not to dictate its content.
Who is behind Flag Hints?
Behind Flag Hints there isn’t a big company, but one vexillology- and web-development enthusiast who wanted to bring together three things:
- a love of maps, flags, and faraway countries ;
- the desire to create a small daily ritual in the spirit of modern daily puzzle games ;
- the fun of designing a simple, clean, and accessible app that runs directly in the browser.
The project evolves over time based on:
- player feedback ;
- new technical ideas ;
- and the time available to develop new features.
What's coming next
Even though the game is already fully playable, Flag Hints is a living project. Some of the planned directions include:
- an archive mode to replay previous days’ flags ;
- optional personal stats (streaks, percentage of correct guesses, etc.), still without a mandatory account ;
- the fun of designing a simple, clean, and accessible app that runs directly in the browser.
These features will be added gradually, with the same focus on clarity and simplicity that already guides the current version of the site.
How to contribute or share your feedback
If you:
- have found a bug,
- think a hint is ambiguous,
- have an idea to improve the game,
- or simply want to send a friendly message,
you can use the site’s contact page (or the e-mail address listed there) to write to the person behind Flag Hints.
Player feedback is invaluable: it helps fix mistakes, fine-tune difficulty, and imagine new ways to make learning geography even more fun.
